Diving

Diving has been a popular activity at Kawanhee that has demonstrated its longevity over the years. Did you know that beginning in the 1940’s diving was practically considered a separate activity from swimming at Kawanhee? Although both were under the same leadership of the aquatics director, separate Diving Awards were presented to campers! This continued into the 1960s but Diving Awards are no longer given at camp.

The diving board has also fallen prey to the Duke of Zanzibar’s pranks, such as in the 1950s when he placed a table and four chairs atop the diving board!

Also mentioned in the swimming exhibit, Mike Peppe was a notable alumnus who was a counselor and employee at Kawanhee before he became a Swimming and Diving coach at Ohio State University, as well as coaching the United States Olympic Diving Team! Five of his divers brought home medals to the US!
