Published in 2013 by longtime camper and current Director of Leadership Training Antonio JP Rullán, The Legend of Kawanhee invents a legend surrounding Chief Kawanhee, the fictional Native American man for whom camp is named. As stated in the preface of the book: “Aside from local legend, the name Kawanhee had no other real meaning or history. This story is an attempt to use the ancient art of mythology to contextualize our subject, named Kawanhee, using and respecting the local Abenaki customs as much as possible. This is certainly not an attempt to illustrate any historical data or infringe on traditions of any group, only a well-intended story to inspire benevolence and personal growth.”
