Canoeing, like many of the other waterfront activities, was an important waterfront skill that was taught at Kawanhee since its first summer in 1921. Being able to pass your canoe and lake swim test awards the camper with maroon and gray double stripes along the bottom of their personalized paddle, a tradition since 1927.
By 1941, there were several canoe trips added to the program, all of them led by Perlie Durgin. Durgin was a registered Maine Guide, however, there is not much else known about this respected man.
Fun History Fact! Let’s talk about Roy “Nick” Nickerson. A past Director of Boating and Canoeing for many years, who attended Springfield College with Raymond Frank! Nickerson, after graduating, would become an excellent and “undefeated” boxer, eventually being recruited to join the Kawanhee staff in his retirement. Nickerson also was the grandfather of two pretty well known Kawanhee campers (and more!): Mark and Mike Standen.
The Canoe Wars is also a long-standing tradition within the Maroon-Gray point battle. Check out this neat picture of a Canoe War in action!
Kayaking would eventually make its way to the Kawanhee program and is a popular activity today. A cool and experienced skill many campers learn is the kayak roll!
